Screenwriting for Young Writers

This eight-week course will help young writers understand the basics and principles of storytelling and screenwriting and provide an opportunity for students to construct their own scripts.  

In this course students will learn: 

  • What makes a good story work? 
  • What makes for strong cinematic storytelling?
  • Learn principles of scene structure and dialogue
  • Introduction to the three-act structure
  • Learn Frantisek Daniel's 8 Sequence Model of Screenplay Structure
  • Build and improve scripts

About David Grant: 

David Grant is a Twin Cities-based screenwriter and playwright. He has written work for Twin Cities Public Television (KTCA TV), Russell Simmons’ Def Pictures, HBO New York, Davis Entertainment, the Showtime Network, Monde World Films, Mixed Blood Theater, and History Theater, among others. He has also written numerous informational scripts for such clients as Health Partners and Hazelden Foundation.

He has been a recipient of screenwriting fellowships from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the McKnight Foundation. He and KTCA, Twin Cities Public Television were awarded the 1990 Regional Emmy Award for Best Original Dramatic Program for “The Screenplay Project: Four Shorts.” 

He teaches screenwriting at FilmNorth, and at MN Prison Writing Workshop. He has also taught screenwriting at The Loft, the Playwrights’ Center, and S.A.S.E., in addition to serving as Mentor in 2016 for screenwriting students at Augsburg University's MFA in Creative Writing program, and for the 2013 Fellows of the Givens Emerging Writers Mentor Program.

He is author of the 1993 Minnesota Supreme Court's Final Report on Racial Bias in the Justice System, author of MN Department of Health's 2015 Report to the State Legislature on Racial Inequities in MN Health Care, and a contributing author  for the anthologies, Blues Vision: “African American Writing from Minnesota,” and “A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota,” from MN Historical Society Press.

He is president emeritus of Screenwriters’ Workshop, a core alumnus member of The Playwrights’ Center, and a member of the Writers’ Guild of America, west.
